Execution

At a certain point, plans for strategy, organization, and change must turn into action. Chances of success can be increased significantly with well demonstrated methodologies that are based on sound guidelines:

  • Projects create the difference
  • Three to five projects at a time
  • Quarterly pace
  • Balance: external and internal projects
  • 2X safety margin: not all will be winners… and that's ok.

Strategic Agenda

The president’s agenda helps to establish balance, pace and sequence in the execution of the strategic initiatives that give concrete expression to the strategic plan. Typically, strategic initiatives take the form of a project. Such projects should be structured to match the pace adopted by the company: three-, four-, or six-month cycles. Longer projects should have milestones to meet the chosen pace. In this way, all project leaders can report on project status at the management forum.

A format to start developing your own agenda is illustrated below:

Leaders of high-performance organizations need a common space where they can define and follow up on the company’s strategic initiatives. This workshop is not aimed at monitoring and correcting daily performance. Depending on their business, companies can accomplish that easily on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. The management forum should take place two, three, or four times per year. It deals with the project initiatives which constitute the concrete implementation of the company’s strategy.

The purpose of the management forum is to continuously update the company’s goal and vision, to articulate it ever more clearly, and to relentlessly drive it to completion through follow-up and input on all critical strategic initiatives.
